Circle Crossbody Bag

This simple boho bag is the perfect quick project for beginners and experienced crocheters!

I loved designing this bag as I was looking for a simple and cute boho bag I could work up quick! This bag is made up of two circles that are crocheted together leaving an opening at the top. I had some clips laying around from making macrame keychains and decided to use them to make the strap easily removable, but they are not necessary for this project!

Materials

Crochet Hook: 6mm

Yarn: Medium (4)

I used Red Heart Super Saver

Yarn Needle

2 Swivel Clasps and 2 D rings (optional)

Stitches

sl st = slip stitch

ch = chain

sc = single crochet

dc = double crochet

Please see the end of this post for instructions on how to complete each stitch!

Pattern

ROUND 1: Start with a magic circle and ch 2 (for this patter, the ch 2 at the start of the round counts as the first dc). Make 11 dc in magic circle. Sl st to join round in first stitch (the ch2 at the beginning of the round). (12 stitches)

ROUND 2: Ch 2. Dc in the same stitch. Make 2 dc in each in the round. Sl st to join round in first stitch. (24 stitches)

ROUND 3: Ch 2. Make 2 dc in the next stitch. *1 dc in the next stitch and 2 dc in the following stitch* Repeat * (1,2 pattern) for the rest of the round (should finish with 2dc in the last stitch). Sl st to join round in first stitch. (36 stitches)

ROUND 4: Ch 2. 1 dc in the next stitch and 2 dc in the following stitch. *1 dc in the next two stitches and 2 dc in the following stitch* Repeat * (1,1,2 pattern) for the rest of the round (should finish with 2dc in the last stitch). Sl st to join round in first stitch. (48 stitches)

ROUND 5: Ch 2. 1 dc in the next two stitches and 2 dc in the following stitch. *1 dc in the next three stitches and 2 dc in the following stitch. Repeat * (1,1,1,2 pattern) for the rest of the round (should finish with 2 dc in the last stitch). Sl st to join round in first stitch. (60 stitches)

ROUND 6: Ch 2. 1 dc in the next three stitches and 2 dc in the following stitch. *1 dc in the next four stitches and 2 dc in the following stitch. Repeat * (1,1,1,1,2 pattern) for the rest of the round (should finish with 2 dc in the last stitch). Sl st to join round in first stitch. (72 stitches)

ROUND 7: Ch 2. 1 dc in the next four stitches and 2 dc in the following stitch. *1 dc in the next five stitches and 2 dc in the following stitch. Repeat * (1,1,1,1,1,2 pattern) for the rest of the round (should finish with 2 dc in the last stitch). Sl st to join round in first stitch. (84 stitches)

Cut yarn leaving about 6 inch tail to weave in, pull end of the yarn through the loop on the hook and pull tight.

Repeat this pattern two times to finish with two circles.

COMBINING THE CIRCLES

To combine the circles, place the two circles together with the right sides facing each other. You can use stitch markers to mark the opening or count as you crochet. If you are using stitch markers, the opening should be 24 stitches.

If you are using clips and d rings to make the strap removable, please see the next section.

Create a slip knot and place it on your crochet hook. Insert your hook through stitches on both circles, use a sl st to join, and ch 1. Sc in 59 stitches around the circle. Make sure you insert your hook through the next stitch in both circles each time. If when you finish, there are not the same number of stitches left in the opening each circle (24 stitches), check to make sure you didn't skip or put two sc in any of the stitches. Once finished, cut the yarn leaving a 6 inch tail to weave in, pull the end through the loop on your hook, and pull tight.

HARDWARE

If you choose to use clips and d rings to make the strap removable, you will need to attach the d rings as you combine the circles.

Create a slip knot and place it on your crochet hook. Insert your hook through stitches on both circles, use a sl st to join, and ch 1. Remove your hook from the loop and slip the d ring on. Insert your hook back into the loop.

Sc in 58 stitches around the circle. Remove your hook from the loop, place a d ring on the loop, and re-insert your hook into the loop. Make 1 sc to secure the d ring.

Make sure you insert your hook through the next stitch in both circles each time. If when you finish, there are not the same number of stitches left in the opening of each circle (24 stitches), check to make sure you didn't skip or put two sc in any of the stitches. Once finished, cut the yarn leaving a 6 inch tail to weave in, pull the end through the loop on your hook, and pull tight.

For the strap, get your clips ready. Create a slip knot and put it on your crochet hook. Stick your hook through the ring on the bottom of the clasp as if it was a stitch and create a sl st to join, ch 1 (this counts as first sc). Make 2 sc on the ring. Next, ch 120. Take the second clasp and make 3 sc in the ring at the bottom of the clasp. Turn and make 1 dc in each chain. Use a sl st to join the dc to the first sc on the clasp. Cut the yarn leaving a 6 inch tail to weave in. Pull the tail through the loop on the hook and pull tight.

STRAP

Create a slip knot and place it on the crochet hook and ch 122. Dc in the third stitch from the hook. Dc in each chain (120 stitches). Cut the yarn leaving a 6 inch tail to weave in. Pull the tail through the loop on the hook and pull tight.

Use the yarn needle and a piece of yarn about 12 inches long to attach the strap to the bag (the bag should still be inside out from combining the two circles). There is no right way to attach the strap as long as it is secure. I like to secure the yarn to the bag with a knot and use the yarn needle to weave the yarn through the last stitch on the strap and the first sc near the opening 3 times. I then tie off the yarn on the bag making sure it is pulled tight. Repeat this process on both sides making sure the strap is not twisted before attaching the second side.

TASSEL

To make the tassel, wrap the yarn around a book or your hands at least 6 inches apart 20 times. Cut the yarn making sure the two ends are on the same side.

Cut another piece of yarn about 8 inches long and tie it around the side of the yarn without the ends as tight as you can. Tie that piece of yarn again about 3 inches from the tassel to create a loop. Cut all the ends on the opposite end from the tie.

Now that it is starting to look like a tassel, cut another piece of yarn about 12 inches long. Place one end up by the tie and make a loop in the opposite direction (pointing towards the tails). Wrap the yarn around the tassel 5-6 times as tight as you can leaving the loop and the tail exposed. Stick the rest of the yarn you had been wrapping with through the loop. Pull the end near the tie, tightening the loop and securing the other end. Pull this as tight as you can and cut the excess.

Now that the hard part is over, trim the ends of your yarn to your desired length!

(If you found this difficult to follow or are more of a visual learner there are many helpful tutorials on youtube!)

To finish the bag, weave in the ends and turn the bag right side out!
