I had so much fun working on this watermelon granny square! I was inspired by the sweet summer vibes of the citrus granny square and decided to continue on to a favorite fruit of mine - watermelon! I love the versatility of granny squares to create bags, tops, and so much more! The possibilities are endless with this square!
For this pattern instead of a swatch, I recommend doing a test granny square. If the finished square's edges are wavy, decrease the hook size. If the finished square is curling up around the edges to form a bowl shape, increase the hook size. It is normal for the square to bowl up slightly, but should lay flat once stretched.

Pattern
ROUND 1: With pink yarn, create a magic circle, ch 2 (this counts as first dc). Dc 11 in magic circle. Pull tight. Sl st to join round with original ch 2. (12 stitches total)
ROUND 2: Ch 2 then make 1 dc in the same stitch. Make 2 dc in each stitch all the way around. After the final stitch, use a sl st to join with first ch 2 in the round. (24 stitches total)
Cut pink yarn leaving a 6 inch tail to sew in. Pull the end through the slip stitch and pull tight.
ROUND 3: New color - white
Create a slip knot and place it on the crochet hook. Join on the last stitch in round 2 with a sl st, then ch 1. Make 2 sc in the next stitch. In the next stitch, make 1 sc. Continue alternating between 2 sc and 1 sc per stitch all the way around. Join with a sl st to first ch 1 in the round. (36 stitches total)
Cut white yarn leaving a 6 inch tail to sew in. Pull the end through the slip stitch and pull tight.
ROUND 4: New color - green

Cut green yarn leaving a 6 inch tail to sew in. Pull the end through the slip stitch and pull tight.
ROUND 5: Color - tan
Create a slip knot and place it on the crochet hook. Join on the last stitch in round 4 with a sl st, then ch 2. Make 1 dc in the next stitch. Make 1 hdc in the next four stitches, then dc in the next two stitches. To make the corner, in the next stitch make 3 edc, ch 2, then 3 edc. *Make 1 dc in the next 2 stitches, 1 hdc in the next 4 stitches, and 1 dc in the next 2 stitches. Make another corned in the next stitch with 3 edc, ch 2, then 3 edc*
Repeat steps in * until the round is complete.
Finish the round with a sl st to the first ch 2 in the round.
Cut tan yarn leaving a 6 inch tail to sew in. Pull the end through the slip stitch and pull tight.
EMBROIDERY: To make the seeds, cut a piece of black yarn about 12 inches long. Tie off one end on the wrong side of the square near the center. Using the yarn needle, pull the black yarn through the stitches in round 1 and push it back through the stitches directly above in round two. To keep the stiches even, continue weaving the black yarn through the square leaving 2 stitches between each seed in the first round and four stitches in the second. This should result in 6 seeds. Tie off the black yarn on the wrong side of the square.
To finish the square, weave in the tails using the yarn needle.
